Leaders from around the world began negotiating a historic global plastics treaty on Monday in Punta del Este, Uruguay.

As the negotiations unfold, the key messages that Only One and partners are pushing are:

  1. We want a treaty that addresses the full lifecycle of plastic, from production to end pollution.

  2. We want the knowledge and expertise of waste pickers and indigenous communities to be
 recognized and implemented.

  3. We need a legally binding international agreement to curb the plastic pollution crisis.

Plastic is a growing crisis for the environment, human health, human rights, biodiversity, and the climate — global actions to address it are urgently needed. As numerous studies have demonstrated, plastic has been found everywhere, not only in ecosystems and the atmosphere, but also in the food we eat, the water we drink, and even inside of our bodies.
