If we don’t act quickly, ocean life will soon be decimated by an unprecedented threat: deep-sea mining. The main area of ocean that corporations want to mine is called the Clarion-Clipperton Zone, a massive swath of the seabed near Hawaii measuring 1.7 million square miles. It’s one of the most biodiverse locations in the entire world, and deep-sea mining would throw the surrounding ecosystems into a state of chaos. Some estimates show that the mining will emit noise levels several hundred times louder than those of a rocket launch, endangering sensitive marine species like whales. The machines would also dislodge huge portions of the ocean floor, creating an underwater sandstorm that, according to scientists, could choke animals hundreds of miles away. Yet we can make sure this environmental tragedy never takes place.
