Tell New Zealand Leaders: No Commercial Fishing in Hauraki Gulf Protected Waters

What you need to know

The Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana is in crisis.

Overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution have devastated marine life in Auckland’s treasured Hauraki Gulf, with populations of fish, seabirds, and mammals, including orcas and fur seals, in freefall.

The Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana Marine Protection Bill — proposed national legislation that came from years of collaboration among tangata whenua, local communities, and advocacy groups — aimed to reverse this decline by establishing new high protection areas and offering safe havens for species to recover. In June, the New Zealand Parliament’s Environment Select Committee unanimously agreed to advance the Bill, finally setting the Gulf on a path toward revival.

But now, at the eleventh hour and against expert advice, New Zealand’s Government has decided to amend the Bill to allow a type of commercial fishing known as ring-netting within the new “high protection areas” — zones designed to exclude harmful activities altogether.

More than 28,000 supporters have signed the open letter calling on New Zealand’s Government to withdraw the last-minute changes to this landmark legislation. You can take your advocacy one step further by directly sending messages to Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, Minister of Conservation Tama Potaka, and Auckland-based National MPs, urging them to reverse this reckless decision.

Take action and tell our leaders to restore the Gulf — not damage it further.

Why your voice matters

Personal messages pack a punch

Direct input from constituents greatly influences decision-makers. Your message builds public pressure, key to ensuring the Bill truly protects the Hauraki Gulf.

Time is ticking

The Government’s rash carveout for commercial fishers undermines over a decade of conservation progress. We have a short window to push leaders to reverse course before it’s too late.

The stakes are high

This move endangers the Hauraki Gulf’s future and sets a harmful precedent, threatening New Zealand’s broader marine conservation efforts and its 30x30 commitment.

Overfishing, habitat loss, pollution, and urban development have caused a 57% decline in fish stocks, a 67% reduction in seabirds, and a 97% drop in whales and dolphins in the Gulf. Scallop and crayfish populations are nearly extinct in some areas. · Darryl Torckler
Overfishing has depleted natural predators like snapper and crayfish, allowing sea urchin populations to explode and devastate kelp forests, leaving behind barren, rocky reefs known as kina barrens. · Darryl Torckler
The Gulf’s deterioration robs future generations of the opportunity to experience its rich marine life and vibrant waters, putting the region’s cultural and economic wellbeing at risk.

What happens next

Your message will go directly to Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, Minister Tama Potaka, and other Members of Parliament based in Auckland. By taking this quick action, you’re helping put decisive pressure on leaders to reverse the last-minute loophole and deliver the strong protections that the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana so desperately needs.
