We're excited to share a major development from the deep sea: The United Kingdom has called for a moratorium on deep-sea mining! With this move, the U.K. joins a growing cohort of 23 countries that oppose this risky practice.
On Monday, the U.K. government called for a moratorium on supporting or sponsoring exploitation licenses for seabed metal mining until sufficient scientific evidence is available to fully understand the impact on marine ecosystems.
The announcement to support a moratorium on deep-sea mining emerged as world leaders gather this week in Jamaica for the International Seabed Authorityโs (ISA) Council negotiations. They will continue discussions on some of the crucial issues around deep-sea mining, including the revision of the โtwo-yearโ loophole that allows countries to apply for mining licenses even in the absence of strong regulations.
