Last week, on June 19th, global delegates met and formally adopted the High Seas treaty in New York — your support of our High Seas campaign was pivotal in bringing us to this moment.
During the adoption meeting, UN Secretary-General António Guterres lauded the formal adoption as a “historic achievement.” The adoption brings the High Seas Treaty one step closer to becoming the single greatest tool in helping protect nature outside of countries borders and jurisdiction.
Now, 60 countries must ratify the treaty. Once ratified, it will be entered into force and become international law. Countries can begin to ratify once the treaty opens for signing on September 20th during the UN General Assembly in New York.
