The U.S. Congress has just banned deadly driftnets from federal waters. It’s difficult to overstate how excited and grateful we are for today’s victory. This is an incredible win for the ocean, and a testament to the power of this community. In a staggering show of public support, more than 200,000 of you joined the campaign and added your name in support of a driftnets ban. Driftnets have been likened to “walls of death.” They can stretch for miles underwater, silently snaring everything in their path, including endangered animals like whales and turtles. We are deeply grateful to Senator Dianne Feinstein and Representative Ted Lieu for their leadership, as well as our partners in this effort: Seaspiracy, the Turtle Island Restoration Network, SeaLegacy, Mercy for Animals, Brock Cahill, Howard Hall, and, the late and dearly missed Rob Stewart. If you’d like to take another action with us, check out our membership plans. With each one you can plant mangrove trees and corals, and directly remove plastic from ocean-bound waterways.
