Write to the Taoiseach and Ministers: Protect Ireland’s Coasts & Communities

2,275 emails sent. Let’s get to 5K

For over five years, a growing movement of people, communities and scientists has called for real action to protect our seas. Despite repeated government commitments, little real progress has been made. Now we need to act. Write to Taoiseach Mícheál Martin and Ministers demanding strong, effective legislation for our seas without further delay.

What you need to know

Ireland’s seas have been waiting long enough.

For over five years, people across the country have been calling for proper protections and still, we don’t have the laws needed to make that happen. Now is the moment to turn commitments into action.

You can help by writing to Taoiseach Mícheál Martin and the Ministers responsible for the marine environment. Ask them to finally deliver strong and effective laws to protect our seas, without any further delay.

Campaign goals

Put real protections in place

Ensure the government delivers MPA legislation that genuinely protects marine life and supports coastal communities.

Make it fair and informed

Decisions must involve local communities and be guided by strong, independent science.

Deliver on 30% protection

Move from promises to reality by protecting 30% of Ireland’s waters in a meaningful, well-managed way.

Currently, Ireland has designated less than 10% of its seas as marine protected areas, but the lack of adequate monitoring and management means these areas are “paper parks” — protected only on paper · Nick Masset
Protected areas are vital to the health of our ocean and the species that depend on it. Ireland's seabirds are more endangered than ever, with the puffin population in severe and rapid decline. · Isabel Doody
A 2023 Irish survey found that 98% of people agreed on the importance of protecting the marine environment and establishing more marine protected areas (MPAs). Two-thirds of those surveyed believed that “a lack of political will” was what’s standing in the way.

Why your voice matters

We’ve spent years raising awareness and building support but without proper protections, damage to marine life and habitats continues.

Strong MPA legislation is the step that turns ambition into action. The government needs to see that people still care, and still expect them to deliver.

What happens next

Once the right laws are in place, we can finally move forward identifying protected areas and working with coastal communities to manage them properly.

This movement has grown over the past five years. Now we need to turn that into action. Add your voice and call on the government to deliver.
