2.1 years, 791 days, or 19,000 hours.

This is the cumulative time that the fishing industry has bottom-trawled the protected areas in Irish waters in the last nine years alone. And this data only applies to marine Natura 2000 sites under the EU Habitats Directive; so the real numbers are even higher. No matter how you slice it, the amount of destruction caused by the unrelenting exploitation of the seafloor is unthinkable and simply unsustainable.

Every year, millions of tons of sea creatures are unintentionally caught in bottom trawls. These casualties are known as bycatch — much of which is simply discarded, wasted life tossed back into the ocean. Among these unintended casualties is the Angel shark, which has experienced a troubling surge in mortality rates in recent years around the Irish Coast. There are only a few strongholds left for the species, such as Tralee Bay. Now is the time to end the needless loss of marine life.

Bottom trawlers devastate "protected" Irish waters. Nets as big as football fields scrape away reefs and kill marine life indiscriminately. Tell @McConalogue to take action now and truly protect our coastal ecosystems. #BanBottomTrawling https://only.one/bottom-trawling

Bottom trawlers are still allowed to destructively overfish in protected Irish waters, and they're putting the Angel shark at grave risk. Urge @McConalogue to end this practice in marine "protected" areas. #BanBottomTrawling https://only.one/bottom-trawling
