The Challenge:
Kelp is a powerhouse when it comes to carbon sequestration — capturing and sequestering at 20x the rate of terrestrial forests — and provides shelter for a host of marine life. Yet, kelp forests across the western part of the United States have declined by 80% due to threats like overfishing and pollution.
The Solution:
12 Tides produces delicious, organic, nutrient-dense baked snacks made from sugar kelp sourced from regenerative ocean farms in Maine and Alaska. The team delivers dual impact by investing in regenerative ocean farming through its sourcing of sugar kelp and by reforesting giant kelp with its nonprofit partner, SeaTrees. The company has sourced over 600,000 pounds of sugar kelp for its snacks and is the number two buyer of kelp in the U.S.
Kelp stands out as a top climate-positive food because it's one of the very few zero-input foods on our planet, requiring no fresh water, no fertilizers, no pesticides, and no arable land. The product is also packaged in a compostable pouch, resulting in more than 50,000 pounds of plastic averted.
Through its partnership with nonprofit SeaTrees, a portion of proceeds goes toward restoring wild kelp forests, with 27,000 square feet of forests restored to date.
