The enchanting mystery of colorful corals has a science behind it, with protein pigments offering a fascinating insight into the rainbow hues we are so familiar with. Corals possess these pigments as a tool for photosynthesis, capturing the light and using it as a fuel for energy. When it gets too bright, however, corals are known to “scrunch,” shifting their pigments closer together to create a continuous and protective layer until the light dims 🌈
