As marine scientists and ocean gardeners work to restore our reefs to their former health, coral nurseries, like the one seen here, have become an effective method of “propagating” resilient corals ready for replanting. Suspended delicately from a tree-like form, these elkhorn coral fragments have a relatively speedy growth rate in comparison to other reef species, with the potential to branch out up to 5 inches per year — that’s about the same rate of growth as human hair! 💇
