Last week, a report revealed that the amount of coral covering the north and central Great Barrier Reef is at its highest ever level during 36 years of monitoring 💙 This is undoubtedly positive news, demonstrating just how resilient the reef is — but it doesn’t change the fact that coral reefs are under immense threat from climate change. If temperatures soar by 1.5°C, scientists say that this is the point of no return for the reef, when bleaching would happen too quickly for strong recovery, and the resilience we’re seeing now at 1.1°C of warming would not continue. The record coral cover on the Great Barrier Reef tells us that there’s still time to save this extraordinary ecosystem, and indicates that planting heat-resistant corals, as you and your fellow Only One members are, is a key part of protecting the reef from the climate crisis 🌊
