Scientists are turning to the ocean to explore alternative ways of naturally sequestering and storing carbon below the waterline, with kelp estimated to absorb up to 200 million tons of CO2 every year — that’s equivalent to the state of New York’s annual emissions! Some organizations have started to cultivate kelp in sea farms, experimenting with biodegradable buoys that drop to the ocean floor once the kelp reaches maturity, sinking the carbon deep into the seabed and protecting our planet in the process 💙🐠
