For highly migratory species like humpback whales, the High Seas are a critical ocean area. Humpbacks make one of the longest migrations of any mammal on the planet: up to 9,900 miles (16,000 kilometers) each year. While they move at what some might call a snail’s pace compared to their big size (as slowly as three to five miles an hour), incredibly they keep this swimming up 24 hours a day, meaning the whales can complete their migration over a month or two. Humpback whales were once critically endangered and are now in recovery, so protecting the High Seas — which is the focus of one of our campaigns — has to be a priority in order to guarantee the whales’ migratory routes.
