Corals — which are, in fact, animals — have been forming reef ecosystems and supporting life on Earth for a very long time. Elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata) is vital to the health of the Caribbean and has, along with staghorn and star corals, built the region’s reefs over the last 5,000 years.
