Scientists studying seagrass have issued an urgent global call to rethink the role of this unique marine ecosystem in tackling our planetary emergency. The review, conducted by experts from UK marine conservation charity Project Seagrass and Swansea University, demonstrates that conserving and restoring seagrass meadows makes significant contributions to achieving 16 out of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which were recently described as “the most important to-do list in the history of humankind.” Right now, global estimates suggest that we lose an area of seagrass around the same size as two football pitches every hour. Bold steps are needed if we are to harness the power of these underwater meadows to fight climate change, draw carbon out of the air, and drive powerful progress in areas such as food insecurity, water quality, wellbeing, and gender equality.
