It can feel overwhelming and scary to consider the future of vulnerable ecosystems like coral reefs, as they face escalating threats from climate change and human activity. Yet despite dire predictions that reefs could be extinct by 2100, the sun is not setting on coral reefs just yet. Communities and scientists all over the world are mobilizing to better understand how we can best aid coral in its fight for survival. Experts around the globe are developing increasingly successful coral restoration methods, and many reefs are becoming better protected as part of new and expanded marine protected areas (MPAs). Protected reefs are better able to survive and reproduce, enabling their coral larvae to also drift into nearby degraded reefs, helping them repopulate too.
