Coral reefs thrive in clear, unpolluted, and shallow waters, having evolved to optimize their exposure to tropical sun rays to help fuel their energy source through photosynthesis. As a result, many shallow water reefs reach across a huge horizontal area to catch as much sunlight as possible, encouraging these coral colonies to grow up to a mighty 10 cm per year!
