Despite its plant-like appearance, the coral we see today is in fact a slow-growing animal — a vibrant, soft “octocoral” developing flexible, woody cores with feathery tentacles and leathery surfaces. Unlike their hard coral counterparts, soft corals don’t have the same stony calcium carbonate skeletons or ability to build reefs, instead swaying with the ebb and flow of the current.
