Near Skala Kallonis in Lesbos Island, Greece, the sun rises over salt marsh vegetation. Salt marshes are unique coastal ecosystems where fresh and salty water mix, many different animals take refuge, and vast quantities of blue carbon are safely locked away in the soil, helping to stop spiraling climate change. Though we’ve lost 50% of the world’s salt marshes to date, together with mangrove forests and seagrass meadows, they are one of the top five climate solutions the ocean has to offer. By amplifying efforts to protect and restore salt marshes over the next decade and beyond, we can have a supersized impact for the planet!
