The ocean’s mangrove forests act as a lively hidden nursery, as their underwater webs of roots offer a safe haven to countless ocean babies, including lemon shark pups that are just seven centimeters long at birth! This young lemon shark, with its yellow, velvety skin, is a little bigger than that but still making the most of life in the mangroves. Mangrove habitats are perfect for growing youngsters to hide from predators while finding lots of food, but they are seriously threatened by coastal development, pollution, and climate change — we’ve already lost up to 35% of mangrove trees worldwide. Lemon shark populations are listed as a “vulnerable” species, so we need to do everything in our power to protect their mangrove nurseries.
