Often confused with seaweeds, seagrasses are actually the only flowering plants to grow in marine ecosystems, with roots, stems, and leaves, along with the ability to produce flowers and seeds. Seagrass meadows have a supercharged ability to pull carbon dioxide out of the air and convert it into organic carbon: up to 30 times faster than a rainforest! These ecosystems support every living thing on Earth, stabilizing the climate, providing habitat for thousands of species of fish, invertebrates, birds, reptiles, and mammals, and sustaining livelihoods for millions of people. Sadly, one hectare of seagrass is being lost every hour. Restoring seagrass beds, along with other coastal ecosystems such as mangrove forests and salt marshes, is a vital step to ensure our planet stays vibrant and liveable π
