Raja Ampat is characterized by breathtaking reefs and lies at the heart of the Coral Triangle. Sometimes called “the Amazon of the ocean,” the Coral Triangle spans 2.3 million square miles (6 million square kilometers) in the Pacific Ocean and is, as its name suggests, roughly triangle-shaped! What’s so impressive is the Coral Triangle contains 30% of the planet’s reefs, despite covering only around 1% of the ocean floor. The marine region sustains more than 100 million people through fishing and tourism. There’s evidence that the Coral Triangle is more resilient to climate change because of its environmental complexity, so there are likely lessons to be learned for rebuilding reefs elsewhere in the world.
