Ocean trees, called mangroves, are one of the “big three” marine habitats, together with salt marshes and seagrass. They absorb carbon dioxide from the air and then cleverly store it in a way that only “blue carbon” ecosystems can — unlike “green carbon” rainforests, which store carbon in biomass and release it when the trees die, mangroves lock most of their carbon in the soil deep below their roots. If undisturbed, it stays there for millions of years, and therefore doesn’t contribute to climate change but rather helps to solve it 🙌 💚
