The ancestral home of the Native American Chumash people is full to the brim with biodiversity on land and in the water. The area hosts 25 threatened, endangered, or critically endangered species, including humpback whales and leatherback sea turtles, along with one of the largest remaining kelp forests on the western seaboard. In November 2021, the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary reached the stage of designation after six years of collaborative, grassroots activism. Nearly 8,000 people signed the petition on Only One in support of what would be the United States’ first ever tribe-led national marine reserve!
