Hawksbill sea turtles are a vital part of coral ecosystems, using their bird-like beak to primarily feast on sponges, an aquatic animal rife in reefs which, in excess, can overgrow and suffocate corals. The distinctive diet of hawksbills is sometimes referred to as “spongivory,” a habit that leads just one turtle to eat an estimated 1,200 pounds of sponges each year — that’s over half a ton! 🧽🐢
