Blades of Posidonia oceanica — an underwater grass that has been called “the lungs of the Mediterranean” for its incredible capacity to pull carbon out of the air — sway with the current. Posidonia oceanica grows in vast, tightly packed meadows on the ocean floor, and scientists have found it can live for more than 100,000 years, making it one of the oldest organisms on Earth: some of the seagrass species’ beds date back to the late Pleistocene and the dawn of humanity!
