A spellbinding assemblage of roots, trunks, branches, and leaves, mangroves form highly productive “blue carbon” ecosystems. They protect coastal communities from sea level rise and extreme weather events, support a wealth of marine species, and store four times as much carbon as rainforests on land. Indonesia is home to over a quarter of all mangroves globally and has made a commitment to rehabilitate 630,000 hectares of ocean forest by 2024.
