Whales play a slow-moving yet crucial role in carbon sequestration in the ocean, with an extensive lifetime of consuming carbon-rich phytoplankton, which then travels safely with them when they finally come to rest on the ocean floor. This deadfall carbon cycle is a fantastic example of the natural climate solutions provided by our ocean, and something that is largely unresearched, but with huge potential. This is just one of the many reasons why it is essential that we support, uplift, and protect marine ecosystems and the animals creating a balanced future for the planet 🐳
