The giant clam lives up to its name, weighing in at an astonishing average of 200 kilograms (over 400 pounds). Many creatures supported by reefs travel to and from their chosen coral spots, but the giant clam remains on the reef throughout its entire life. During the daytime, giant clams open their shells to give the algae inside them a chance to photosynthesize and release oxygen — yet another example of how coral reefs help sustain the air we breathe and protect the environment.
