The pea-sized plastic pellets we see today are known as “nurdles”, a ready-made “pre-production” microplastic typically melted down and used in the construction of most plastic products. Their travel-friendly weight and size makes them easy to transport, but difficult to retrieve if they find their way into the ocean. Sadly, many do, with an estimated 11.5 trillion nurdles ending up in the ocean every year, which if linked, would circle the earth one and a half times.
