Photo of the day

Soft, swaying corals like the ones in our photo today are known as ahermatypic corals, and visually resemble living plants seen moving with the ebb and flow of peaceful ocean shallows. Unlike the rigid calcium carbonate skeleton reefs built by hard corals, soft corals are held together by a jelly-like substance called mesoglea, shaping what is called the hydrostatic skeleton and allowing the corals to move with the current.
