Sea fans, also known as gorgonians, are soft corals. At first glance sea fans resemble plants, but in fact they are animals! A central skeleton made of a flexible, horny scleroprotein called gorgonin — the root of the name gorgonian — supports the delicate coral structure. Sea fans are super smart: to improve their chances of catching plankton to eat, they grow across the current and form a net with their branches.
