Despite enduring an extensive and highly damaging bleaching event in 2022, coral monitoring in The Great Barrier Reef has suggested that in northern parts of the reef, there has been a record-high coral coverage at an average of 36%, with a benchmark for reef recovery being just 20%! This is a hopeful measure of live stony coral in place of sponges, algae, and other ocean organisms, and a critical call for urgent action to continue to protect our reefs and plant more coral.
