From cone roots and stilt roots, to buttress roots, and roots with a “knee”, the distinctive tangle of mangrove tree root systems varies hugely across the approximately 80 mangrove species. “Peg” roots, as you can see here, have a unique appearance akin to pencils stuck in the mud, growing vertically above and laterally below to keep the ocean’s trees safely anchored in the swamp 🌱✏️
