These unlikely climate engineers are thought to be a hugely valuable asset to carbon capture, with their foraging habits and coastal roaming reducing the density of smaller plants to allow established trees to flourish and continue to sequester carbon. Scientists believe that if the population of African forest elephants was restored to its original size, the potential for carbon capture could reach 6,000 metric tons per square kilometer – that’s 14 times what is captured by trees in New York City’s Central Park! 💧🐘 (Our gorgeous photo today was the Portrait winner in the Underwater Photographer of the Year 2023 competition.)
