Scientists have discovered fossil reefs as old as 500 million years, with some of Earth’s first reef-builders thought to be photosynthesizing about 3.5 billion years ago. Fast forward a fair few millennia, and not much has changed, apart from the estimated 1 billion people living alongside them.
