Photo of the day

It’s hard to miss the dense tangle of roots that contribute to the unique identity of mangroves. The ones in today’s photo are known as stilt roots, a sturdy and resilient network designed to stabilize and protect shorelines. By binding together soil, sand, and sediment, these roots help to counteract coastal erosion, in some cases accumulating up to three kilograms per square meter of biomass every year, including leaves, flowers, and fruits, to support their firm grip on the coast 🌱🌸
