Coral reefs are home to a plethora of aquatic life, providing a safe haven for 25% of all marine species, including the mystical branching vase sponge. First appearing a mighty 65 million years ahead of coral reefs, the sea sponge species boasts over 8,000 varieties, spanning the sea floor with their striking colors and constructions. Known by some scientists as the “civil engineers of the reef,” ocean sponges help to enhance the flow of clean currents, filtering as many as 1,500 liters of water per day to create a healthy habitat for coral reefs and their creatures 🦀 🧽
