Nurdles are lentil-sized plastic pellets, a pre-production material made from fossil fuels that make up almost all plastic products. With an astounding 230,000 tons ending up in the ocean every year, nurdles are a significant threat to our ocean and marine life, often mistaken for food by fish and other ocean creatures. Over in Texas, citizen science project Nurdle Patrol has been operating in Port Aransas, gathering vital information from scientists, policymakers, and the public on these plastic pellets that make their way onto our shores. With over 15,000 surveys of shores completed and over 2 million plastic pellets collected, Nurdle Patrol is a hopeful initiative educating and accelerating change in plastic pollution π π
