As we learn more about our expansive deep blue, we are discovering more and more ways of aligning marine life conservation with effective climate action. Recent talks in Brazil have highlighted the role whales can play in keeping sequestered carbon safely locked in the ocean, with their feeding habits stimulating the production and growth of small but mighty marine plants called phytoplankton. These buoyant green plants fuel their growth with sunlight and carbon dioxide, making them a crucial part of carbon reduction. As whales can consume up to 16 tons of plankton daily, their excrement traps a remarkable amount of carbon, with a 2010 study calculating that the pre-whaling population of about 2.5 million great whales would have exported nearly 210,000 tons of carbon per year to the deep sea, equivalent to taking roughly 150,000 cars off the road each year. We have an opportunity to protect our majestic whale population: sign and share our petitions on only.one/act to create sanctuaries for our marine life across the globe π³ π
