Remarkably, the anatomy of sharks has inspired smart design such as watercraft, cars, and water turbines. Some researchers are now trying to make artificial shark skin that would reduce friction drag and stop the accumulation of algae and barnacles in the water — and even prevent bacterial growth when applied to hospital surfaces. Sharks are, without a doubt, incredible animals. Sadly, every year, around 73 million fins are sliced from the backs of these majestic ocean predators. But in November, CITES delegates will have the chance to change this when they gather in Panama and vote on which species deserve worldwide legal trade regulation. Our message to them is clear: sharks must receive the global protection they need to survive. We’re at 28,000 signatures of support for this campaign so far, and still going strong 💪
