The mesmerizing reef we see today is filled with vibrant soft coral, a bendable and leathery coral type that can sometimes resemble colorful plumes of feathery trees. Despite their plant-like appearance, they are actually sessile animals that “take root” on the ocean floor, caught up in a unique and ancient partnership or “symbiosis” with tiny algal organisms called zooxanthellae 🪶
