In the race to solve climate change, the ocean is an overlooked and underfunded ally. Marine-based solutions could close as much as a fifth of the emissions gap to keep global temperatures within the limit of 1.5°C. From producing renewable energy from offshore wind and tidal power, to developing sustainable food systems, to decarbonizing marine transportation, if we harness the ocean, it could reduce emissions by more than 8.4 gigatons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) by 2050. Ocean-based solutions also offer incredible potential to remove carbon from the atmosphere. From seagrass meadows and salt marshes, to tiny phytoplankton and megafauna, marine life plays a vital role in capturing the planet’s excess carbon — which is why protecting and restoring blue carbon habitats is at the heart of Only One’s action plan and of our members’ collective impact.
