The trees that live in our ocean, called “mangroves,” give us a wealth of environmental and social benefits. Mangrove swamps protect shorelines from storm surges (waves of water caused by severe cyclones), reduce the impact of flooding, support alternative livelihoods, and enhance local fisheries. As mangrove scientist Emily Pidgeon puts it, “A very thin ecosystem that gets wet every time the tide comes in, mangroves are like a skin wrapping around the edge of a continent. Just as our human skin protects us, mangroves provide vital services to the land and the people who live there.” Essentially, we can’t do without mangrove forests! Your contribution as an Only One member to restore and plant ocean trees is part of the critical global effort to save mangroves 🌱
