One of the four powerful solutions that Only One members help advance all year round is plastics removal. Every minute, a garbage truck’s worth of plastic enters the ocean, a rate that could triple by 2040. This pollution wreaks havoc on marine life, killing millions of animals every year and flooding fragile habitats already struggling with the threat of an escalating climate crisis. It has a devastating impact on marginalized communities, low-income nations, and coastal communities already disproportionately facing the consequences of climate change. But it hasn’t always been this way, and it doesn’t have to continue. Spurred on by the knowledge of the past, the urgency of the present, and a passion to shape the future for the better, innovators and activists around the world are leading the charge to clean up our seas and help create healthier communities by rethinking plastic and stopping pollution at the source. We’re fortunate to work with a range of these inspiring changemakers, including our project partners CleanHub, Plastics For Change, and Sungai Watch (whose team is in today’s photo). Since the new wave of Only One launched back in June, our members have supported the recovery of 13,000 kilograms of ocean-bound plastic, equivalent to over 1.3 million plastic bottles 🙌 💙 Thank you for being on this journey with us — you’re what makes this positive impact possible.
