Back in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, seaweed harvesting was a significant industry, contributing to glass and soap production, as well as linen bleaching and iodine extraction. In recent years, we’ve seen a resurgence of interest in seaweed farms for more environmentally sustainable purposes, with the marine plant being recognized as the fastest-growing biomass on the planet to flourish happily without pesticides or fertilizers. The added benefit of this seaworthy resource is the rapid carbon sequestration it achieves, reportedly capturing nearly 200 million tons of the greenhouse gas every year — that’s as much as New York state’s annual emissions!
