Photo of the day

The Pacific Remote Islands are home to some of the world’s last remaining wild and healthy ecosystems, along with the waterways of ancient and modern indigenous voyagers. Lots of threatened and endangered wildlife flourishes in this ocean area, including green and hawksbill turtles, pearl oysters, giant clams — like the one in today’s photo — reef sharks, coconut crabs, bumphead parrotfish, dolphins, and whales. Kingman Reef, part of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument, is the United States’ most intact coral reef. In partnership with the community-driven Pacific Remote Islands Coalition, Only One is urging President Biden to honor and secure the cultural and biological legacies of the Pacific Ocean by expanding the islands’ existing marine protected area.
