It’s time for a refresher on blue carbon 💙 Blue carbon is the term used to describe carbon dioxide captured by and stored in coastal wetlands: mangrove forests, seagrass beds, and tidal marshes, or salt marshes — like the stunning tidal marsh covered in pale purple sea lavender typical of the region of East Anglia in England in today’s photo. All of these habitats have a supercharged ability to pull carbon dioxide out of the air and convert it into organic carbon, helping reverse climate change in the process. In fact, we know from scientists that ocean-based climate solutions like these have the potential to solve a fifth of the climate crisis by 2050! Blue carbon ecosystems are also highly productive, providing food and shelter for a range of critical species, and many benefits to people. Up to now, the power of blue carbon to restore the ocean and tackle the climate crisis has been significantly underrepresented, which is why it’s at the heart of Only One’s action plan.
