Canada boasts the longest coastline in the world, managing a sprawling 2.76 million square kilometers of ocean in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic. Countless iconic marine species call its waters home, from puffins and polar bears, to salmon and sea lions, to otters and orcas. Because of its critical proximity to ocean resources, Canada also hosts one of the biggest fishing industries in existence, catching more than 1.1 million metric tonnes of fish every year. Unfortunately, the current approach to maintaining Canada’s wild fish populations is not only defective, but also devastating the ocean — primarily because of overfishing. The Canadian government’s fisheries mismanagement is making it impossible to conserve and support long-term ocean health. To address this threat, Oceana Canada and Only One teamed up to launch a petition to demand that the Canadian government regulates fishing and prioritizes rebuilding healthy wild fish populations. We hope you’ll add your name today to help us reach our target of 80,000 signatures 🤝
